ring handle

Coffee cans with ring handles were produced by: Chamberlain and Grainger at Worcester, Derby, Machin, Minton, New Hall and Worcester. (Examples available for makers in bold.)

Chamberlain

A can with a large ring handle with pointed lower attachment. 16 flutes. Ring rather flattened in section. Finely potted in bluish body with straw transparency. Foot recess with bevelled edges. Possibly Chamberlain or Grainger Worcester (aj569, h59.8, w66, b54.1 (61) handle: h17, v18.6, w6.6, 5.1, t3.9)

Chamberlain tapered can with a large and very wide ring handle with pointed lower attachment. 18 flutes. Finely potted in distinctly bluish body with gray transparency. Foot recess with bevelled edges.Base with small painted 343. Chamberlain Pattern Book descibes this as: "Hambleton, blue & gold. G. Rogers". (aj360, h65, w68, b44.2 (53.5) handle: h17.8 (26.1), v19.3, w9.7, 6.2, t4.2)

Chamberlain tapered can with flared rim and ring handle with clip top and pointed lower attachment. 18 flutes. Finely potted in body with yellowish transparency. Deep foot recess with bevelled edges. Painted 531 on base. Chamberlain Pattern Book descibes this as: "French shape, oak leaf & berry border." gilding badly rubbed. (aj030, h64, w72, b (48.9) handle: h (24), v19.5, w7.8, 5, t4)

Derby

Derby coffee can with a large "ring" handle which is flattened against the cup ( slightly flattened in section). Red Derby mark and pattern 731. (aj443, h60.6, w63.2, b(60.1), handle: v21.4, h15.5, w7.8, 5.5, t3.8)

Grainger

A can with a large ring handle with rounded lower attachment. 16 flutes. Ring handle round in section. Finely potted in body with slightly straw transparency. Foot recess with bevelled edges. Probably Grainger Worcester (aj626, h62.4, w66.6, b52 (61.5) handle: h17.8, v17.2, w5.6, 4.3, t4.9)

Machin

Machin coffee can with typical ring handle. Creamy body with white/gray translucency. Pattern printed in brick red and over painted by hand. No number or mark on the base but this is pattern 140. (aj510 h59.1, w62.7, b53.9 (61.5) handle: v17.4, h16.5, w7.9, 5.1, t3.7)

Minton

Minton coffee can with a larger "ring" handle of type 1. Pattern N 51 (1.5mm) painted in red on base. Fine potting in dull buff bone china with very poor orange translucency. Finely crazed glaze. (aj535 h59, w65.3, b53.3, (61.3) handle: v18.7, h18.7, w9, 7.1, t3.7)

Minton coffee can with a "ring" handle of the smaller type 1. Whitish body but glaze is finely crazed and translucency creamy. It has a Sevres-type mark (10 mm wide) and pattern number 60 painted in blue on the base. (aj072, h62, w66.5, b58, handle: v15.5, h14.4,w8.5)

Minton coffee can with a small "ring" handle of type 2. Marked with pattern number 811:x (aj458 h61.3, w67.7, b54.2, (60.2) handle: v15.1, h13.1, w7.1, 5.1 (5.2)

New Hall

New Hall made two types of ring handle. On their earlier hybrid hard paste porcelain cans the ring was round but in later bone china cans the ring is oval.

New Hall coffee can with typical oval ring handle found on bone china cans with pointed lower attachment. No mark but this is pattern number 1181 (Preller, 2003). (a111)

Worcester- Barr

Worcester coffee can with typical ring handle with protruding, rounded lower attachment. Marked with inscribed B (see right) for the Barr management. Rather gray body with only fair translucency. (aj618, h61.5, w62.4, b50.7, (59.6) handle: v17.6, h18.2 (24.3), w7.1, 6, t3.8)

Ring handle with thumbrest

A coffee can with small ring handle with thumb rest and pointed lower attachment. No marks. Creamy bone china body with good translucency. Pink lustre resist vine decoration with red and yellow lines. Maker unknown. (aj615, h61, w62, b48.5 (60) handle: v14.2, h12.6 (17.8), w7.6,5.27, t3.8)
