Simple Loop handles

Simple loop handles were produced by: John and Thomas Rose at Coalport, Davenport, Derby, Neale, New Hall, "Pattern Book", Pinxton, Spode, Turners, Wedgwood, Worcester. (Examples available for makers in bold.)

Simple Loop handles with pointed top attachment
John Rose Coalport type

Simple loop handle, set near the top rim, and  8 to 9mm in width near their top attachment which is pointed like a gothic arch. Cup walls get thicker towards base which is rounded inside. ?No pattern numbers. See also "French" Handles.

Thomas Rose, Coalport
Simple loop handles  set near the top rim and  less than 8mm in width near their top attachment which is pointed like a gothic arch.  Cup walls get thicker towards base which is rounded inside. Sometimes pattern number on base.

New Hall
Generous simple loop handle, set below  the rim, with very smooth  inner surface, and  attachments which are v-shaped (see right).  Cup walls of fairly even thickness and cup has fairly flat bottom inside. New Hall also made ring handles.

A spiral fluted Bute shaped cup with a simple "loop" handle, set below the rim. No mark but this is pattern 202 of New Hall. (a053, h60, w82)
Neale
Wide, simple loop handle with V-shaped attachments, body with yellowish translucency. 
Neale cup with a simple "loop" handle with V-shaped attachments. Fine potting with even wall thickness curving into bottom inside. Finely crazed glaze and body with yellowish translucency. Shallow foot recess and painted 8 on base (see insert). With teapot and coffee can below. (m034, h54, w77, b (39) handle:  w10, 7) Miller

"Pattern Book"
Simple loop handle with pointed attachments, greyish body. 
 A cup with a simple "loop" handle with pointed upper and lower attachments. Thicker towards base. Vertical sides to foot recess. Grey hard paste body. No mark but this is pattern 362 from  "Pattern Book"  (Berthoud, 2002). (aj495, h61.8, w78.9, b34.5 (39.6) handle: h13.1 (18.8), v29.4, w8.4, 5.7) ex Lynn Price.
 A cup with a simple "loop" handle with pointed upper and lower attachments. Thicker towards base. Vertical sides to foot recess. Grey hard paste body. No mark. "Boy at door " pattern crudely painted over black transfer outline, with picture of boy inside on bottom suggests "Pattern Book" see Pl 352 (Berthoud, 1999) and Pl 684 (Miller & Berthoud, 1985). "Swansea"
Very generous simple loop handle with pointed attachments, neatly potted in slightly speckled body with unusual greenish translucency. 
 A cup with a very generous simple "loop" handle with pointed upper and lower attachments. Decorated with black lines and bat print of an eastern scene. Sold as Swansea?  (aj219, h61, w83.6, b36.4 (41.9) handle: h19, v32.8, w8.8, 6.3)

Simple loop handle with pointed upper attachment which is larger than most and a bit like a snake's head, pointed lower attachment, translucent white body.

Derby
This maker marked wares with a handpainted crown mark in Puce on earlier cups  and in red on later ones.  Normal sized bute cups  have a simple loop handle with pointed attachments in two shapes,  type 1 wide (over 10mm at top, see left), and  type 2 thinner (~8mm at top, see right). Larger "breakfast" cups have a "dent" in the loop handle. Derby also made ring handles

Pinxton
Generous, simple loop handle,  with sharper vertical curve than most others, and rounded upper attachment.

Worcester

Loop handle with "dent", rounded top attachment, and very slight ridges along either side of the outer surface. No pattern numbers. 

 Worcester coffee cup with a "loop" handle with a dent and rounded top attachment. Finely potted in rather blue body with straw transparency.  A small cup with a "loop" handle with a dent and rounded top attachment. Finely potted in creamy body with straw transparency. Wide, flat foot and small turned circle in centre of base. Roger Edmundson says Worcester. (aj129, h53.6, w76.5, b31.7 handle: h16.3, v31.2, w9.2, 5.8)
Unknown
 A cup with a simple "loop" handle with top attachment rounded. Heavily potted in blueish body and thick towards base which has recess with bevelled edge. Sold as Worcester?? (aj092, h58.5, w76.5, b38.5 handle: h15, v34.6, w9.8, 6.7)
Wedgwood
Simple loop handle with rounded top attachment and pointed lower. This maker marked bute cups with a WEDGWOOD mark printed on the base. 
Wedgwood cup with a simple "loop" handle, eye- shaped in section with rounded top attachment . Delicate potting in bone china with WEDGWOOD printed  in brick red on the base. Bone china was first made in 1812 ( see des Fontaines in Godden, 1983). (aj096, h59, w82, b36 handle: h16.5, v31.4, w7.1) 
Davenport

Simple loop handle with rounded top and pointed lower attachments, set near the top rim.  Finely potted, narrow base. Davenport also made square handles

Davenport  cup with a simple "loop" handle. Even wall thickness, rounded bottom inside, white body. Saucer marked with pattern number 197 in gilt (ht 2mm). (aj361, h54, w85.5, b34.1 (39.2) handle: h17.4 (23.1), v31.3, w8, 5.7, t5)

Simple Loop handles with half-oval top attachment
Spode
Simple loop handle,  with half-oval upper and pointed lower attachment.   
 A Spode cup with a wide simple "loop" handle  with half-oval upper attachment. Fairly even wall thickness in speckled body with pinkish translucency. SPODE and 648 painted in red on base (~2mm). (Pattern first used ~1805 confirmed by Pam Woolliscroft, Spode Museum.) Base with curved edges. (aj158, h58, w82.6, b36.7 handle: h16.3, v33, w10, 6.7) 
Simple Loop handles where top attachment smooths into cup
Turner
Simple loop handles that smooth into cup at top and are rounded at bottom attachments. This handle type is probably hand made and not formed in a mould.
 A cup with a wide simple "loop" handle  that smooths into the cup so the transfer can run over the attachment. Even wall thickness. Brick red flower inside on bottom. Footrim free of glaze and with vertical inside edge. No mark. Saucer like Spode's without footrim. This Royal Lily pattern and sucrier in set suggest Turner.  (aj459, h60, w83.1, b37.1 (42.2) handle: h(23.2), v37.3, w10.7, 7, t4.4)
Wedgwood
Simple loop handles smoothing into cup at top and bottom attachments. This handle type is probably hand made and not formed in a mould. This maker marked bute cups with a WEDGWOOD mark impressed on the base.
