New Hall Bute cups |
|
Bute cups were produced by the New Hall company in a variety of styles over a long period. (see Holdgate, 1971, de Saye Hutton, 1990) The main handle types are: simple loop, round ring, oval ring, "Spode" type and no handle (tea bowl), |
| Examples |
|---|
| No handle |
|---|
| New Hall Bute shaped teabowl with no handle (or footrim). No mark but this is pattern number 229. (a054, h64, w77) |
|
| Spode type handle |
|---|
| New Hall cup with a "loop" handle of the Spode type but with stronger "kick". The handle has the smooth inside surface typical of New Hall. No pattern marked but this is 138. (a052, h60, w80 ) |

|
| Simple loop handle |
|---|
| Generous simple loop handle, set below the rim. The top and bottom attachments are v-shaped (see right) as if cut with a knife. A most distinctive feature is the very smooth inner surface of the handle which feels as if it has been smoothed so there is little trace of the seam left by the mould. |

| Ring handles |
|---|
|
There are two main types, both set well below the rim: (1) Large round ring handles which are slightly flattened in section and found on hybrid hard-paste cups (Chamberlain Worcester ring handles are even larger and usually set closer to the rim), (2) Large oval ring handles which are found on later bone-china cups including large Bute-shaped breakfast cups. There are two variants, one more delicate than the other. |
